Tip the scales to visualize the weight of air!

Students conduct air experiments with balloons and a tipping scale to discover that air is made up of matter and therefore has weight. To begin, set up the scale and fill 4 balloons with air. Attach 2 balloons on each end and ensure it is balanced. Next, pop 1 balloon and discuss the results. When the scale tips, students think critically about the visual evidence to make their own conclusions about the weight of air. Older students can also identify the composition of air, determine how it varies based on temperature, and relate air mass to more advanced concepts like barometric pressure.

The compact scale fits on a desktop or chair so 4-6 experimenters can easily observe. Constructed of durable yet lightweight ABS tubing, it’s ready for impromptu investigations anytime, anywhere. Included lesson direction is adaptable for grades K-4 and 5-8. The included lesson direction details setup instructions, activities by grade level, learning objectives, and teaching suggestions to expand lessons. Full contents lists below. Recommended for Elementary and up.
